Who are you, Your Worm Guy?
I am a former banker who took the business and people management skills I gained at the bank and started an agriculture company producing animal feed and plant fertiliser. Having grown tired of the 9-5 office job, I escaped the city and set myself up in the countryside surrounded by forests and crop fields. I enrolled in a vocational school to learn poultry farming and began raising maggots… Yup, exactly – maggots and maggot poop!
what are you doing?
I produce the world’s most sustainable animal protein and organic plant fertiliser.
How are you doing it?
I take food waste from vegetable producers and supermarkets and feed it to Black Soldier Fly larvae. When all the food is consumed, the deliciously juicy maggots are fed to chickens, reptiles, fish etc. The remaining maggot poo is used by gardening enthusiasts, for whom it is important to use organic, 100% natural fertilizer.
Why are you doing it?
I am an entrepreneur at heart and I wanted to create something from scratch with my bare hands. It was also important to be more in touch with nature compared to what an office in the city centre was offering. Additionally, I wanted to have fun in the process – from banking to producing insects is quite an adventure, isn’t it?
But most importantly, I wanted to build something meaningful and have a significant impact on the world. Turning thousands of tons of food waste into high-quality animal feed does the trick.
Building in Public
YourWormGuy has been publicly documenting the process of becoming an entrepreneur since day one. In a private Facebook group, YourWormGuy shows in detail the processes of Black Soldier Fly production and talks about the joys and pains of becoming and entrepreneur. All of the above will be delivered sincerely, honestly and with a lot of fun!
